History of the Palace

The Verride Palace’s history dates back to the first half of the 18th century. The palace has seen various uses, a number of different owners and successive work campaigns. The Baron and Viscount of Moledos, Francisco de Paula Silva Tovar, deputy to the constitutional courts, resided there in the 1820s

Over its history, various projects have altered its original 18th-century architecture.

In particular, João Lobo Santiago Gouveia, the newly-knighted Count of Verride, conducted a work campaign in 1911 after purchasing the palace. Changes were made to the south façade and to the interior of the noble floor, which was given an eclectic, revivalist décor.

The banking group, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, purchased the property in 1969 and built a mansard floor the following year.

It also bought two adjacent pre-earthquake buildings to the east, on the Travessa da Portuguesa to Rua do Almada, to expand its facilities. Demolished in 1975, a new contemporary-style building designed by the architect Palma de Melo was built in their place and linked internally to the palace’s cellars.

In the 1980s, the architectural firm, ArquiTrês, under the supervision of architect João de Almeida, made several changes to the rear façade from the body of the palace to the vestibule, in addition to interior modifications. The Lisbon City Council purchased the palace in 2003.
