Description of the Collection

1930s-1940s

The collection of 30’s portrays the luxury of French decorative tradition, complemented by the haute couture characterized by elegant lines and luxurious fabrics, a direct influence of the glamour of cinema. In the late 1930s and during the war period, due to the difficulties of the times, imaginative played a major role to replace unavailable materials with alternative ones (i.e. cork was used by Ferragammo for the sole of its shoes).

1950s

The collection reflects the post-World War II setting and the need to rethink design as a product tailored to new ways of life, materials and production processes, witnessing the use of new industrial materials and greater versatility in furnishings for an emerging middle class, first in America and later in Europe. In haute couture, once French stylists surmounted the scarcity of luxury materials, the sophisticated New Look became paramount, as a promise of well being and elegance. Actually, the 1950s were the golden age of haute couture and conspicuous consumption.
